Giving and taking feedback — Interview skills for students

“That was bad” helps nobody; “Your opening was clear. Next time, slow down at the numbers” helps a lot. Constructive feedback is kind, specific and about the work, not the person — and given soon, in private. When you receive feedback, thank the person, ask what they mean if it is unclear, and use it. Arguing or giving up wastes the gift.

Tip

Kind, clear, useful — “praise one thing, give one specific tip, talk about the work”

  1. Giving: start with one good point, give one specific tip, talk about the work (not the person), speak soon and in private.
  2. Unhelpful: “That was bad”, mocking, only listing mistakes, comparing with others, bringing up old errors, vague praise only.
  3. Taking: “Thank you, I will work on that.” Ask for an example if unclear. Do not argue, sulk or hit back.

Use it for: Group projects, peer review in class, practice interviews, sports teams and the workplace.

Worked example: 🗨️ Is this constructive or unhelpful feedback? “Your opening was clear. Next time, slow down at the numbers.” → constructive feedback

  1. It praises one thing and gives one specific, useful tip about the work.
  2. So it is constructive feedback.

Check: Try it: give a friend one good point and one specific tip on something they made, then ask them for the same ✓
