The thank-you note — Interview skills for students

A short thank-you note after an interview is polite and memorable. Send it within 24 hours: thank them for their time, recall one detail from the conversation (“I enjoyed hearing about your plan for a reading club”), restate your interest, and sign off with your name. Keep it to four or five lines, spell their names right, and never ask “Did I get it?”.

Tip

Thank, recall, restate — “thank them, recall one detail, restate your interest”

  1. Parts: the thanks → one detail you recall → your interest → the sign-off.
  2. Send it within 24 hours to everyone who interviewed you, even if you think it went badly.
  3. Avoid: waiting two weeks, asking for the result, long essays, copied templates, misspelt names, demands.

Use it for: After interviews, internships, college visits, mentoring sessions and anyone who helped you.

Worked example: 💌 Which part of a thank-you note is this? “I enjoyed hearing about your plan for a reading club.” → a detail you recall

  1. The line mentions something specific the interviewer talked about.
  2. So it recalls a detail from the interview.

Check: Try it: write a four-line thank-you note to a teacher or mentor who helped you this year ✓
