Workplace etiquette — Interview skills for students

Your first internship or part-time job is about more than the task. Arrive on time, greet your coworkers, ask when you are unsure, meet deadlines and keep your phone on silent. If you make a mistake, tell your supervisor quickly — hiding it makes it worse. Avoid gossip, long personal calls, taking credit for others’ work and leaving without telling anyone.

Tip

Respect the work, time and people — “be on time, ask, own mistakes, keep personal things for breaks”

  1. Good: arriving on time, greeting coworkers, asking when unsure, owning your mistakes, meeting deadlines, phone on silent, respecting others’ time.
  2. Poor: gossiping, long personal calls, taking others’ credit, hiding a mistake, arriving late, ignoring instructions, leaving without telling.
  3. Feedback from a supervisor: “Thanks, I’ll fix it.” Will be late or absent? Inform in advance.

Use it for: Internships, part-time and holiday jobs, volunteering, school duties and group projects.

Worked example: 🏢 You made a mistake in a bill. What is best? → tell your supervisor

  1. Most mistakes are easy to fix when told early; hiding them makes them bigger.
  2. So tell your supervisor.
