Setting team goals — Leadership skills for students

“Do something for the planet” is a wish; “Plant 40 saplings near the school gate by 30 July” is a goal. A clear team goal says what, how much and by when. Write it down, share it with every member and split it into weekly targets — 60 saplings in 4 weeks is 15 a week. Then check progress every week.

Leader's tip

What, how much, by when — “a goal you can measure and a date to finish”

  1. A clear goal has a number and a date: “Collect 200 old books for the library by Friday.” A vague goal: “Collect lots of books sometime.”
  2. Weekly target = goal ÷ weeks: 60 saplings in 4 weeks → 15 a week. Still needed = goal − done so far.
  3. Good habits: write it down, share it with all, small weekly targets, checking progress. Poor: no deadline, goals nobody knows, far too many goals.

Use it for: Eco-club drives, book and food collections, sports practice targets and class magazines.

Worked example: 🧺 The goal is to collect 18 food packets in 3 weeks, the same number each week. How many food packets each week? → 6

  1. The same number each week means sharing equally: divide by the number of weeks.
  2. 18 ÷ 3 = 6 each week.

Check: Try it: write one team goal with what, how much and by when, then split it into weekly targets ✓
