Making group decisions — Leadership skills for students

Teams decide in two common ways. A vote is quick: everyone picks, the choice with the most votes wins — good for choosing a trip or electing a class monitor. Consensus means talking until everyone can accept the decision — needed for team rules or how to share the work, because everyone must live by it. A majority is more than half of the votes.

Leader's tip

Vote or agree? — “a vote for quick choices, consensus for what all must live by”

  1. Vote: a quick choice among options — the class trip, a team name, one of two dates. The choice with the most votes wins.
  2. Consensus: decisions everyone must follow or act on — team rules, sharing the work, a code of conduct.
  3. Majority = more than half: of 30 votes it is 16; of 25 votes it is 13. Before a vote, make sure all options are clear.

Use it for: Class trips and parties, electing monitors, team names, club rules and project plans.

Worked example: 🗳️ Your class votes on the trip: old fort 16, planetarium 10, science park 5. Which trip wins the vote? → old fort

  1. Compare the votes: 16, 10 and 5. The biggest is 16.
  2. The choice with the most votes wins: old fort.

Check: Try it: hold a fair vote at home on one small choice — explain the options first, then count ✓
