Communication in a team — Leadership skills for students

Teams fall apart over silence and surprises. Good team talk is clear (“Practice moved to 4 PM tomorrow, same ground”), early and kind, and it reaches everyone. When a member is not contributing, the best first step is a private, kind talk — ask if all is well, explain the task again or match a task to their strengths. If nothing changes, ask the teacher to help.

Leader's tip

Clear, early, kind — “tell everyone, tell it early, tell it kindly”

  1. Good: clear short updates, asking when unsure, one group chat for plans, saying “I need help”, sharing bad news early.
  2. Poor: ignoring messages, rumours and gossip, last-minute surprises, rude replies, silence about problems.
  3. A member not helping? 1) talk privately and ask if all is well, 2) explain the task again or match it to their strengths, 3) if still stuck, ask the teacher to help — never shame them in the group chat.

Use it for: Group chats for projects, sports teams, clubs and event committees.

Worked example: 🤔 A teammate has not done his part for a week. What is the best first step? → talk to him privately

  1. There may be a reason you do not know, and a public complaint hurts the team.
  2. So the first step is to talk to him privately.

Check: Try it: send your team one clear update with what, when and where — and reply to every team message within a day ✓
