Managing time on a project — Leadership skills for students

A project due in three weeks is not a problem — a project started the night before is. Break the work into steps (research, making, practice), guess how many days each needs, add them up and compare with the days you have. The days left over are spare days for surprises. Start this week, not in the last week.

Leader's tip

Steps, dates, spare days — “split the work, date each step, keep a buffer”

  1. List the steps and give each step a number of days and a mini-deadline.
  2. Days needed = add up the steps. Spare days = days you have − days needed. Due in 14 days, tasks 3 + 5 + 2 = 10 days → 4 spare days.
  3. Do what is due sooner first, start early and check your progress every week.

Use it for: Science models, class magazines, charts, school plays, exhibitions and holiday homework.

Worked example: 📅 Your class magazine is due in 13 days. Research takes 2 days, making it takes 5 days and practice takes 2 days. How many spare days will you have? → 4

  1. Days the tasks need: 2 + 5 + 2 = 9 days.
  2. Spare days = 13 − 9 = 4.

Check: Try it: for your next project, write each step with its days and see how many spare days you have ✓
