Confidence — Leadership skills for students

Confidence is believing you can try. It shows when you speak up in class, try out for the team or ask for help. Low confidence hides at the back and says “I can’t”. Showing off is different from confidence: boasting about marks and mocking weaker players put others down. Confidence grows with practice — prepare, then try.

Leader's tip

Confident, not cocky — “believe you can try, without putting anyone down”

  1. Confidence: speaking up in class, trying for the team, asking for help, making eye contact, volunteering to lead.
  2. Low confidence: never raising a hand, saying “I can’t”, hiding at the back, mumbling answers. Showing off: boasting about marks, mocking weaker players, talking over others.
  3. Build it: practise aloud first, stand straight with your head up, and use kind self-talk — “I can try this.”

Use it for: Assemblies, class answers, trials for teams, new schools and clubs, and stage events.

Worked example: 💪 Confidence, low confidence or showing off: boasting about marks? → showing off

  1. Boasting puts yourself above others instead of just trying your best.
  2. So it is showing off.

Check: Try it: raise your hand once in every class for a week, even just to ask a question ✓
