Bigger and smaller (>, <, =) — Maths worksheet

To find the bigger number, look at the tens first: 64 has 6 tens and 46 has only 4 tens, so 64 is bigger. If the tens are the same, the ones decide. The signs help us write it: > means "is bigger than", < means "is smaller than" and = means "is the same as".

The method

Tens decide — “compare the tens first; only if the tens are the same, compare the ones”

  1. Compare the tens digits first. More tens means a bigger number.
  2. If the tens are the same, compare the ones.
  3. The open side of > or < always faces the bigger number.
  4. How many more = bigger number − smaller number.

Use it for: Deciding who has more, reading scores in a game, and the comparing chapter of Class 1 maths.

Worked example: Which sign goes in the gap: 46 __ 64? <

  1. Compare the tens first: 46 has 4 tens, 64 has 6 tens.
  2. 4 tens is less, so 46 is smaller than 64.

Check: The open side of < faces 64, the bigger number ✓
