Ages 7–9 — number bonds, bridging through 10, near doubles, rounding and adjusting, counting up, and adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers from the left.
Ages 9–12 — tens-first multiplication, doubling and halving, × 4 and × 8, ÷ 4 and ÷ 8, splitting for division, and remainders.
Ages 11–14 — percentages, best estimates, counting change, time in minutes, squares up to 30 and a mixed challenge.
Ages 9–14 — 3-digit adding and subtracting, rounding up and adding back, 3-digit × 1-digit, squaring any 2-digit number, choosing a 2-digit × 2-digit method, dividing by 2-digit numbers, fractions as decimals, estimating square roots and the day of the week for any date.
Mental maths means working out a sum in your head, without paper or a calculator. It is not about magic tricks: it is a set of strategies — making 10, counting up, splitting numbers, doubling and halving, rounding and adjusting — that turn hard-looking sums into easy steps. This course is for children of 7 to 14 years: Part 1 covers quick addition and subtraction (Class 1–4), Part 2 covers multiplication and division (Class 3–6), Part 3 uses mental maths for everyday life — percentages, estimates, change and time (Class 5–8), and Part 4 takes on bigger numbers — 3-digit sums, squares of any 2-digit number, dividing by 2-digit numbers, fractions as decimals, square roots and the day of the week for any date (Class 4–9).
40 questions per sheet with an answer key — print, save as PDF or solve online.

Mental maths is doing sums in your head, without paper or a calculator. Children learn strategies such as making 10, counting up, splitting numbers into tens and ones, doubling and halving, and rounding and adjusting, so that a hard sum becomes a few easy steps.
Learn one strategy at a time, practise for 10 minutes a day, and use real life: prices in a shop, change, time and scores. Ask your child to say how they worked a sum out — explaining the strategy builds speed and confidence faster than rote drills.
Children can start number bonds and bridging through 10 at 6–7 years (Class 1–2). Mental multiplication and division suit 9–12 years (Class 3–6), percentages, estimation and squares suit 11–14 years (Class 5–8), and Part 4 — 3-digit numbers, fractions as decimals, square roots and calendar dates — suits 9–14 years (Class 4–9).
Start from the weekday of 1 January. Add the month code (the days before that month, after taking away whole weeks) and the number of days after the 1st, then take away 7s. Lesson 28 gives the month codes for 2026 and 2027 and shows how leap years like 2028 change them.
They do different jobs. Written methods are good for long, exact sums; mental strategies are faster for everyday numbers and help children check written answers. Strong students use both — and understand why each strategy works.
Class 1–2: number bonds, bridging through 10 and near doubles (lessons 1–3). Class 2–3: adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers (lessons 4–7). Class 3–5: multiplication, division and remainders (lessons 8–13). Class 4–6: 3-digit numbers (lessons 20–22). Every lesson has a free printable worksheet.
Sign in and pass the 20-sum test of a lesson (16 or more right) to earn its badge. Pass every lesson in a part — Part 1 is lessons 1–7, Part 2 is 8–13, Part 3 is 14–19, Part 4 is 20–28 — and you get that part’s certificate, with a code anyone can check.
