Earning from a stall — Money maths for kids

A lemonade stall, handmade greeting cards or clay diyas for a festival fair are fun ways for children to earn with a grown-up’s help. First you spend on materials. You must sell enough to get that money back; after that, each sale is earning.

The method

Cost back first — “sell enough to get your costs back — everything after that is earning”

  1. Sales = number sold × price of one.
  2. Earning after costs = sales − costs.
  3. To get the cost back, sell at least cost ÷ price of one (round up).

Use it for: School fair and festival stalls, craft sales, and money-sense projects in Class 6–8.

Worked example: Sneha spends ₹120 to start a stall and sells each greeting card for ₹15. What is the smallest number Sneha must sell to get back the ₹120? → 8

  1. 120 ÷ 15 = 8.
  2. It divides exactly, so 8 cards.

Check: 8 × 15 = 120 and 7 × 15 = 105 is not enough ✓
