You need: a white flower (such as a white chrysanthemum or rose), a glass of water, food colour and a few hours of waiting. What happens: after some hours the petals become tinted with the colour. Why: a stem has very thin tubes that carry water up. Water climbs narrow tubes and gaps by itself (capillary action), and as water evaporates from the petals, more is pulled up the stem. Paper towels, cloth and chalk also let water climb; plastic, glass and metal do not.
