You need: an empty thread reel, a pencil, string, a small paper cup and coins as the load. What happens: the reel spins on the pencil and pulling the string down lifts the cup up. Why: a single fixed pulley does not make the load lighter — it changes the direction of your pull, and pulling down is easier. A moving pulley shares the load between two parts of the string, so you pull about half as hard but twice as far. Flagpoles, wells and cranes use pulleys.

Pull down, lift up — “a fixed pulley changes the direction of the pull; a moving pulley halves it”
Use it for: Class 6–9 lessons on simple machines; a hands-on STEM project for kids at home.
Check: With a moving pulley, lifting 10 cm means pulling about 20 cm of string ✓
