You need: sheets of paper, two books, coins and a ruler. What happens: a flat sheet across a 15 cm gap sags with just a few coins, but the same sheet folded into a zigzag, rolled into tubes or folded into a U-channel holds many more. Why: folds stand up like little walls, so the paper bends much less. Engineers use the same idea — triangles in bridges and towers, arches and domes in old bridges and temples, and tubes in bamboo and pillars.

Shape makes strength — “folds, tubes, triangles and arches make thin materials strong”
Use it for: STEM challenges, engineering clubs and science fairs; Class 5–9 lessons on structures.
Check: A wider gap between the books means fewer coins ✓
