You need: muddy water, a funnel, cotton or a clean cloth, sand and pebbles, and a clean glass. What happens: the water that drips through is much clearer, and the mud stays on the filter. Why: the filter’s tiny gaps let water through but trap the mud. Other ways to separate: handpicking stones from dal, sieving bran from flour, winnowing husk from grain, letting mud settle, and evaporating water to get salt back. Clear water can still have germs, so filtered water is not for drinking.
