How to use the roman numerals converter
- Choose Number → Roman or Roman → Number.
- Type a whole number from 1 to 3999, or a Roman numeral using I, V, X, L, C, D and M (small letters are fine).
- Read the answer and the place-value steps. If the numeral is not valid, the message tells you which rule it breaks.
- Use the chart below for quick lookups from 1 to 100.
Formulas
| Symbols | I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000 |
|---|---|
| Adding rule | Equal or smaller letter after a bigger one → add: VI = 5 + 1 = 6 |
| Subtracting rule | Smaller letter before a bigger one → subtract: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900 |
| Repeating rule | I, X, C, M repeat at most 3 times; V, L, D never repeat |
Solved examples

Answer: MMXXVI
Why 3999 is the largest standard Roman numeral
M (1000) can be repeated only three times, so MMM is 3000 and MMMCMXCIX is 3999. Romans wrote bigger numbers by drawing a bar over a letter to multiply it by 1000 (V̄ = 5000), but that is not part of the standard system taught in school, so this converter stops at 3999. There is also no Roman numeral for zero.
Where you see Roman numerals
Clock faces, chapter and volume numbers, class names (Class IX, Class XII), years on films and buildings, and lists in exam papers (i, ii, iii). In school, Roman numerals come in Class 3–5 maths, and they appear in reasoning sections of Olympiad and competitive exams.
Frequently asked questions
How do you write 4 and 9 in Roman numerals?
4 is IV (one before five) and 9 is IX (one before ten). Writing IIII is not standard because a letter cannot repeat more than three times.
What are the Roman numerals from 1 to 10?
I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X.
What is 2026 in Roman numerals?
2026 = MM (2000) + XX (20) + VI (6) = MMXXVI.
Is there a Roman numeral for 0?
No. The Roman system has no symbol for zero; it starts at I (1).
Why is IC wrong for 99?
Only I can come before V or X, only X before L or C, and only C before D or M. So 99 = 90 + 9 = XC + IX = XCIX.
How is 50 written in Roman numerals?
50 is L. 40 is XL and 60 is LX.
