Word limits in school and board exams

CBSE and state board English papers set word limits for writing tasks — for example a notice in about 50 words, a letter or an article in about 120 words, and a speech or a story in 150–200 words. Writing far more wastes time; writing much less loses content marks. Practise at home with this counter until you can judge the length by eye.

College assignments and scholarship essays usually give a range such as 800–1,000 words or a character limit for online forms. The "characters without spaces" figure matches what many forms count.

How words are counted in Hindi and Marathi

Many online counters break Devanagari words apart at every matra or half letter, so “विद्यालय” becomes three or four "words". This counter treats letters together with their matras, the anusvara and the halant (virama) as one word, and it ends sentences at the danda (।) as well as at full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. Mixed Hindi–English text is counted correctly too.

Characters are counted as Unicode characters, so a conjunct like “स्ते” counts as 3 characters (स + ् + ते) even though it looks like one shape. Word counts are the figure teachers and editors use.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is a 2-minute speech?

At a clear speaking pace of about 130 words per minute, a 2-minute speech is roughly 260 words, a 3-minute speech about 390 words and a 5-minute speech about 650 words.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

At an average reading speed of 200 words per minute, 1,000 words take about 5 minutes to read silently and about 7–8 minutes to read aloud.

Does this word counter work for Hindi and Marathi?

Yes. Devanagari words are counted with their matras and half letters, so “विद्यालय” is one word, and the danda (।) is treated as the end of a sentence. Mixed Hindi–English text works too.

Are numbers and hyphenated words counted as one word?

Yes. “well-known”, “don’t”, “3.5” and “1,00,000” each count as one word, the same as in Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

Characters with spaces counts every letter, digit, punctuation mark, space and line break. Characters without spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks — many application forms use this number for their limit.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. The text is counted in your browser and never leaves your device. It is not stored and not added to the page link.
