Talking in group projects — Communication skills for students

Group projects succeed or fail on communication. Share your idea briefly, build on others’ ideas (“Nice! And we could add a chart too.”), ask quiet members what they think and agree who does what before you leave. Keep everyone updated in one place. Pushing only your idea, going silent for days, mocking an idea or changing plans secretly hurts the whole group. Meetings need fair time too: if 4 members share a 20-minute meeting equally, each gets 5 minutes.

Communication tip

Yes, and… — “build on ideas, then agree who does what”

  1. Helps group work: sharing ideas briefly, building on an idea, asking quiet members, agreeing who does what, updating the group, summing up decisions.
  2. Hurts group work: only pushing your idea, going silent for days, mocking an idea, side chats in meetings, changing plans secretly, blaming in the chat.
  3. Build on ideas (“Great point. Let’s add it to the plan.”), don’t shut them down (“Boring. Next.”). Time sums: share equally = minutes ÷ members; time left = total − time used.

Use it for: Science models, class charts, eco-club drives, school events and any team homework.

Worked example: 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Does this reply build on the idea or shut it down? “Nice! And we could add a chart too.” → builds on the idea

  1. The reply accepts the idea and adds something to it — “yes, and…”.
  2. “Nice! And we could add a chart too.” builds on the idea.

Check: Try it: at your next group meeting, end by saying aloud who does what and by when ✓
