Online manners and safety — Communication skills for students

Online communication follows the same rules as face to face — and a few more. Be kind: no mean memes, no forwarding rumours, and ALL CAPS reads as shouting. Be careful: keep your password, home address, phone number and any OTP private, never click unknown links, and never meet an online stranger. Ask before posting other people’s photos, think before you post, and if anything online feels scary or mean, tell a trusted adult at once.

Communication tip

Kind and careful online — “would you say it face to face? would you share it with a stranger?”

  1. Safe and kind online: keeping passwords secret, asking before posting, kind comments only, thinking before posting, blocking bullies, telling an adult at once.
  2. Unsafe or unkind: sharing your address or password, meeting online strangers, forwarding rumours, posting a mean meme, clicking unknown links.
  3. Keep private: your password, home address, phone number, an OTP, where you are right now. Fine to share: your favourite colour, book or sport, a fun fact.

Use it for: Class group chats, online classes, games with chat, video calls and posting photos.

Worked example: 🛡️ Online, keep it private or fine to share: an OTP? → keep it private

  1. An OTP lets someone get into an account or use money.
  2. “an OTP” should be kept private.

Check: Try it: with a parent, check one of your accounts — is the password secret and is your address hidden? ✓
