Logging out on shared devices — Cyber safety for kids

School labs, cyber cafés, a cousin’s phone, the family laptop — on any shared device, the next person sees whatever you leave behind. Log out (closing the tab is not enough), say no to “Save password?” and “Stay signed in”, take your pen drive and files, and lock or close the screen when you step away. A private (incognito) window helps by not keeping history, but it does not make you invisible.

Stay safe

Leave nothing behind — “log out, don’t save passwords, take your pen drive, lock or close”

  1. Always log out before you leave — closing a tab may keep you logged in.
  2. Never save passwords or card details on a shared device; untick “stay signed in”.
  3. Take your files and pen drive; lock the screen when you step away; a private window keeps no history but does not hide you from sites.

Use it for: Computer labs, cyber cafés, library computers, borrowed phones and family devices.

Worked example: 🖥️ Safe or risky on a shared computer: staying logged in? → risky on a shared device

  1. The next person can open your account and see or post as you.
  2. So it is risky on a shared device.

Check: Try it: next time you use a shared computer, log out and check that the account really asks for the password again ✓
