How to make an 8-bit Flying Adventure game — retro game maker

Puff your jetpack, fly through the gaps between brick towers and grab the coins — how far can you go? Play it first, then open it in the Retro 8-bit Studio and change it until it is your own game.

🎮 Controls: Z or ↑ puff the jetpack · press Z on the title screen to start

The numbers that make the game

At the top of the 8-bit (TIC-80) code are the settings — change one, run the game, and feel the difference. This is how game designers balance a game.

var GAP = 44How tall the gaps are (bigger = easier)
var SPEED = 1.2How fast the towers come
var FLAP = 2.8How strong one jet puff is
var GRAVITY = 0.15How hard you fall
var SPACING = 90Pixels between towers
var GOAL = 20The score for the SUPER FLYER trophy
var SKY = 10The sky colour (0 to 15)
var SOUND = trueFalse = a quiet game (F4 changes the sounds)
var MUSIC = trueFalse = no title tune (F5 changes the music)
var GROUND = 124Where the grass starts

7 ways to change the flying adventure game

Try them in order. The studio ticks each one off when your change works.

  1. F1 Code: bigger gaps — change var GAP = 44 to 60, then Ctrl+R to play.
  2. F1 Code: a different speed — var SPEED = 1.2 → 0.8 (calm) or 2 (wild).
  3. F1 Code: moon gravity — var GRAVITY = 0.15 → 0.08.
  4. F1 Code: a sunset sky — var SKY = 10 → 3 (any colour 0 to 15).
  5. F1 Code: your own title — change "FLYING ADVENTURE" to your game's name (CAPITALS look best).
  6. F2 Sprites: paint your own flyer (sprite 256) — a bird, a plane, you!
  7. F4 Sounds: make your own jet-puff sound — pick sound 0, draw new volume or pitch bars.
