Longer, taller and heavier — Maths worksheet

We compare things by length (longer, shorter, taller), by weight (heavier, lighter) and by how much they hold (more water, less water). Think about the real things: a bus is longer than a pencil, an elephant is heavier than an apple, a bucket holds more water than a cup. When lengths are given in centimetres, take away to find how much longer.

The method

Compare and subtract — “decide which is more, then take the smaller from the bigger for "how much more"”

  1. Longer or shorter: compare lengths. Heavier or lighter: compare weights.
  2. Tallest of three: compare all three heights.
  3. How much longer or heavier = bigger − smaller.

Use it for: Lining up by height, carrying bags, filling bottles, and the measurement chapter of Class 1 maths.

Worked example: Which is heavier: an apple or an elephant? An elephant

  1. Think of the real things: an elephant is far bigger and heavier.
  2. An elephant is heavier.

Check: An apple fits in your hand; an elephant cannot even be lifted ✓
