The method

Read, choose, check — “read the question, pick the right method and check the answer makes sense”

  1. Decide what the question asks: count, compare, add, take away, shape or pattern?
  2. Use the method from that lesson.
  3. Check: an addition answer is bigger than both numbers; a take-away answer is smaller than the first.

Use it for: Revision before a Class 1 maths test or the end of the year.

Worked example: 14 − 5 = 9

  1. Count back 5 from 14: 13, 12, 11, 10, 9.
  2. 14 − 5 = 9.

Check: 9 + 5 = 14 ✓
