Shapes around us — Maths worksheet

Flat shapes have straight sides and corners — a triangle has 3 of each, a square and a rectangle have 4, a pentagon 5 and a hexagon 6. A circle is round with no corners. Things around us have solid shapes too: a ball is a sphere, a dice is a cube, a tin can is a cylinder and a brick is a cuboid.

The method

Sides and corners — “a flat shape is known by how many straight sides and corners it has”

  1. Triangle 3, square 4, rectangle 4, pentagon 5, hexagon 6 sides — the same number of corners.
  2. A square has 4 equal sides; a rectangle has 2 long and 2 short sides.
  3. A circle is round and has no corners.
  4. Solid shapes: ball → sphere, dice → cube, tin can → cylinder, ice-cream cone → cone, brick → cuboid.

Use it for: Spotting shapes at home and in the park, drawing, and the shapes chapter of Class 1 maths.

Worked example: How many corners does a hexagon have? → 6

  1. Count the corners of a hexagon one by one: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
  2. A hexagon has 6 corners.

Check: A hexagon also has 6 sides — sides and corners are always equal in number ✓
