The method

Count back — “start at the bigger number and count back the number you take away”

  1. Start at the bigger number.
  2. Count back the number you take away.
  3. How many more or how many left = bigger number − smaller number.
  4. Check by adding back: answer + number taken away = the first number.

Use it for: Sweets eaten, toys given away, children and chairs, and the subtraction chapter of Class 1 maths.

Worked example: 15 − 6 = 9

  1. Count back 6 from 15: 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9.
  2. 15 − 6 = 9.

Check: 9 + 6 = 15 ✓
