The method

Borrow a ten — “when the top ones digit is smaller, take 1 ten and make it 10 ones”

  1. Bigger number on top, ones under ones.
  2. Top ones digit smaller? Borrow 1 ten: ones + 10, tens − 1.
  3. Subtract the ones, then the tens.
  4. Check: answer + the number taken away = the top number.

Use it for: Mangoes left after selling, pages left to read, winning margins, and the subtraction chapter of Class 2 maths.

Worked example: 62 − 27 = 35

  1. Ones: 2 is smaller than 7, so borrow 1 ten: 12 − 7 = 5.
  2. Tens: 5 − 2 = 3. So 62 − 27 = 35.

Check: 35 + 27 = 62 ✓
