Addition with carrying — Maths worksheet

Write the numbers one under the other, ones under ones. Add the ones first. If the ones make 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry 1 ten over to the tens column. Then add the tens, not forgetting the carried ten.

The method

Carry the ten — “add the ones first; if they make 10 or more, carry 1 ten to the tens”

  1. Ones under ones, tens under tens.
  2. Add the ones. 10 or more? Write the ones digit and carry 1.
  3. Add the tens and the carried 1.

Use it for: Adding runs in cricket, people on a train, and the addition chapter of Class 2 maths.

Worked example: 47 + 38 = 85

  1. Ones: 7 + 8 = 15 — write 5, carry 1 ten.
  2. Tens: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8. So 47 + 38 = 85.

Check: 85 − 38 = 47 ✓
