Data handling: reading a table — Maths worksheet

A table puts information in rows: a name and a number on each line. To answer a question, first find the rows you need. "In all" means add every number. "How many more" means subtract. "The most" or "the least" means compare all the numbers.

The method

Find the row — “read the right row of the table first, then do the sum the question asks”

  1. Read the title so you know what the numbers count.
  2. In all → add every number.
  3. How many more → bigger − smaller.
  4. Most / least → compare all the numbers and pick that row.

Use it for: Class votes, scoreboards, shop sales, and the data handling chapter of Class 3 maths.

Worked example: Fruits sold at a stall on Monday:
Mangoes: 24
Bananas: 18
Apples: 15
How many more mangoes than bananas were sold? → 6

  1. Find the two rows: Mangoes 24, Bananas 18.
  2. 24 − 18 = 6.

Check: 18 + 6 = 24 ✓
