Fractions: half, quarter and third — Maths worksheet

A fraction is a part of a whole cut into equal parts. Half means 2 equal parts, a third means 3 and a quarter means 4. To find a quarter of 20, divide 20 into 4 equal parts: 20 ÷ 4 = 5. Three quarters is 3 of those parts. If a roti is cut into 4 equal pieces and you eat 1, you ate 1/4.

The method

Divide, then take — “divide by the number of equal parts, then take as many parts as you need”

  1. Half of a number = number ÷ 2. A third = ÷ 3. A quarter = ÷ 4.
  2. Three quarters = a quarter × 3.
  3. Pieces eaten out of equal pieces = a fraction: 1 of 4 pieces = 1/4.
  4. Write fractions in lowest terms: 2/4 = 1/2.

Use it for: Sharing rotis, pizzas and fruit fairly, and the fractions chapter of Class 3 maths.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.
