Division with remainder — Maths worksheet

Not every number shares out exactly. 29 ÷ 4: the biggest answer in the table of 4 that is not more than 29 is 28 (7 × 4). So there are 7 full groups (the quotient) and 1 left over (the remainder). The remainder is always smaller than the number you divide by.

The method

Biggest fit, then leftover — “find the biggest table answer that fits; what is left over is the remainder”

  1. Find the biggest number in the table that is not more than the total: that gives the quotient.
  2. Remainder = total − (quotient × divisor).
  3. The remainder must be smaller than the divisor.
  4. If everyone must fit (boats, autos), use one more than the full groups when there is a remainder.

Use it for: Packing mangoes in bags, rows of children, boats for a trip, and the division chapter of Class 3 maths.

Worked example: What is the remainder when 29 is divided by 4? → 1

  1. The biggest number in the table of 4 that is not more than 29 is 28 (7 × 4).
  2. 29 − 28 = 1.

Check: 7 × 4 + 1 = 29 ✓
