Percentage basics — Maths worksheet

Per cent (%) means out of 100. 25% of something is 25 parts out of every 100. To find a percentage of a number, multiply by the percentage and divide by 100. To change marks into a percentage, divide the marks by the total and multiply by 100. A percentage is also a fraction: 25% = 25/100 = 1/4.

The method

Out of 100 — “per cent means "out of every hundred": 25% = 25/100 = 1/4”

  1. p% of a number = number × p ÷ 100.
  2. Marks as a percentage = marks ÷ total × 100.
  3. p% as a fraction = p/100 in its simplest form.
  4. All the parts make 100%: the rest = 100 − the part you know.

Use it for: Marks in tests, discounts in shops, cricket stats, and the percentage chapter of Class 5 maths.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Percentage calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: What is 25% of 200? → 50

  1. 25% of 200 = 200 × 25 ÷ 100.
  2. 5000 ÷ 100 = 50.

Check: 25% is a quarter, and 200 ÷ 4 = 50 ✓
