Fractions and decimals — Maths worksheet

A mixed number such as 2 3/4 can be written as an improper fraction: 2 wholes are 8 quarters, plus 3 quarters makes 11/4. To add or subtract fractions with different denominators, first change them to the same denominator. Decimals help us write smaller units in bigger ones: 3 kg 250 g = 3.25 kg and 7 rupees 45 paise = 7.45 rupees.

The method

Same denominator first — “change fractions to a common denominator; line up decimal points”

  1. Mixed → improper: whole × denominator + numerator, over the same denominator.
  2. Unlike fractions: use a common denominator (the LCM), then add or subtract the numerators. Answers can be improper, like 7/6.
  3. 1 kg = 1000 g, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 km = 1000 m, 1 L = 1000 mL, ₹1 = 100 paise: 250 g = 0.25 kg.
  4. Compare decimals by writing both with the same number of decimal places: 0.50 > 0.45.

Use it for: Recipes, shopping bills in rupees and paise, weights and lengths, and the fractions and decimals chapters of Class 6 maths.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Fraction calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: Add 1/2 and 2/3 (write the answer as a fraction). → 7/6

  1. Common denominator 6: 1/2 = 3/6 and 2/3 = 4/6.
  2. 3/6 + 4/6 = 7/6.

Check: 7/6 − 2/3 = 7/6 − 4/6 = 3/6 = 1/2 ✓
