Counting to 50 and tens — Nursery and KG maths

Bigger numbers are easier in tens. Your child counts up to 20 pictures in groups of five, counts in tens to 50, puts tens and ones together (2 tens and 6 ones make 26), and finds numbers before and after up to 50.

How to teach it

Tens first, then ones — “count the tens — 10, 20, 30 — then count on the ones”

  1. Count the tens: 10, 20, 30, 40.
  2. Then count on the ones: 21, 22, 23 …
  3. 2 tens and 6 ones: 20 and 6 make 26.

Use it for: Counting money in tens, reading bigger numbers, and getting ready for place value in Class 1.

Worked example: 2 tens and 6 ones make which number? → 26

  1. 2 tens is 20. 6 ones more.
  2. 20 and 6 make 26.

Check: 20 + 6 = 26 ✓
