How to teach it

Take away and count what is left — “cover the ones that go away with your finger, then count the rest”

  1. Count how many there are at the start: 4.
  2. Cover the ones that go away with your finger: 1.
  3. Count what is left: 3. So 4 − 1 = 3.

Use it for: Sharing, giving away and eating sweets — and getting ready for subtraction in Class 1.

Worked example: There are 4 balloons. 1 flies away. How many balloons are left? 🎈🎈🎈🎈 → 3

  1. Start with 4. Cover 1 with your finger.
  2. Count what is left: 1, 2, 3.

Check: 4 take away 1 leaves 3 ✓
