Competitions and teamwork — Robotics for kids

In a robot challenge, teams build and program a robot to do tasks — push cans into a circle, stack blocks or follow a track — and score points. A good team shares the jobs: a builder, a programmer, a tester, a captain and a note-keeper. Good teamwork means listening to every idea, sharing tools, praising teammates, following the rules and helping others. Scores are simple sums: items × points each, plus bonuses, minus penalties.

Robot tip

Rules, roles, retries — “read the rules, give everyone a job, and learn from every run”

  1. Score = items × points each + bonus − penalties.
  2. Best round = the highest score; average = total ÷ number of rounds.
  3. Roles: builder, programmer, tester, team captain, note-keeper. Play fair and learn from every run.

Use it for: School and inter-school robot challenges, robotics clubs and any team project.

Worked example: 🏆 In a robot challenge each can pushed into the circle scores 10 points. A robot pushes in 6 cans and gets 20 bonus points for parking in the end zone. What is its total score? → 80

  1. 6 cans × 10 points = 60 points.
  2. 60 + 20 bonus = 80.

Check: 80 − 20 = 60 = 6 × 10 ✓
