Design a tiny AI project — AI for students

You can design a tiny AI project on paper. Choose a problem (sort fruit photos), collect examples, label them, check and correct any bad labels (clean the data), split them into a training set and a test set, train the model, test it with the NEW examples it has never seen, measure its accuracy, then improve the data and test again. To measure it, work out the accuracy: correct ÷ total × 100. A fruit sorter that gets 17 out of 20 new photos right is 17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85% accurate.

AI tip

Accuracy = correct ÷ total × 100 — “test on new examples and work out the percent it got right”

  1. Steps: 1 choose a problem → 2 collect examples → 3 label them → 4 check and correct bad labels (clean the data) → 5 split into training and test sets → 6 train → 7 test with new examples → 8 measure accuracy → 9 improve the data and retest.
  2. Accuracy = correct ÷ total × 100. Wrong = total − correct. Expected right = accuracy ÷ 100 × total.
  3. Keep some examples apart for testing (for example one fifth); the rest are for training.

Use it for: Science fairs, coding clubs and any “build your own AI” activity.

Worked example: 🎯 Ishaan’s fruit sorter was tested on 20 new fruit photos and got 17 right. What is its accuracy in percent? → 85

  1. Accuracy = correct ÷ total × 100 = 17 ÷ 20 × 100.
  2. 17 × 100 = 1700, and 1700 ÷ 20 = 85%.

Check: Try it: plan a “leaf or flower?” sorter on paper — how many labelled examples, how many kept for testing, and what accuracy you would be happy with ✓
