Users and their needs — App development for students

Apps are made for users — the people who use them. Before building anything, app makers find out who their users are and what they need: a student who keeps forgetting due dates needs a homework planner, a grandparent with weak eyesight needs big text. A need is the user’s problem, often in their own words; a feature is the part of the app that solves it. Counting your user groups tells you whose needs matter most.

Developer's tip

User first — “learn who the users are and what problem each of them has”

  1. Users are the people the app is for; there are often several groups (students, teachers, parents).
  2. A need is the user’s problem; a feature is how the app solves it.
  3. Ask and watch real users before you build.

Use it for: Starting any app project, school competitions and writing a short app pitch.

Worked example: 👥 A school app has 270 students, 160 teachers and 295 parents as users. How many users does it have in all? → 725

  1. Add the three groups.
  2. 270 + 160 + 295 = 725.

Check: 725 − 295 − 160 = 270 students ✓
