Algorithms: steps in order — Computer worksheet

An algorithm is a list of clear steps that solves a problem, in the right order — like a recipe. A computer follows the steps of a program exactly as written, so the order matters: you dig a hole before you put in the seed. A mistake in a program is a bug, and finding and fixing it is debugging.

Remember

First, next, last — “an algorithm is a list of steps in the right order”

  1. An algorithm = clear steps in the right order; a program = an algorithm written for a computer.
  2. To order steps, ask: what must happen before this step can happen?
  3. A mistake is a bug; finding and fixing it is debugging.

Use it for: Class 5 computational-thinking lessons, writing steps for daily jobs and planning a program.

Worked example: 🔢 To plant a seed, which is the FIRST step? → dig a small hole

  1. The seed needs a hole to go into, and soil and water come after.
  2. So the first step is to dig a small hole.

Check: Hole → seed → soil → water ✓
