Flowchart symbols — Computer worksheet

A flowchart is a picture of an algorithm. Each kind of step has its own shape: an oval for Start and Stop, a rectangle for a process (a doing step), a diamond for a yes/no decision and a parallelogram for input or output. Arrows show the direction of flow. At a diamond we answer the question and follow the Yes or No arrow.

Remember

Shape tells the step — “oval start/end, rectangle process, diamond decision, parallelogram input/output”

  1. Oval = start or end; rectangle = a process step; diamond = a yes/no decision; parallelogram = input or output.
  2. Arrows show the direction of flow from one step to the next.
  3. At a diamond, answer the question, then follow the Yes arrow or the No arrow.

Use it for: Class 5 computer lessons on flowcharts, drawing a flowchart for a daily task and planning a program.

Worked example: 🔷 In a flowchart, which shape shows a yes/no decision? → diamond

  1. A decision asks a question with two answers.
  2. The shape with two ways out is the diamond.

Check: A diamond has corners for Yes and No ✓
