Newspaper Basket Craft for Kids (Best Out of Waste)
Roll old newspaper into strong tubes and weave a real basket — a best out of waste craft for kids aged 8–12 that holds pencils, toys or fruit.
What your newspaper basket can look like
Materials
- 6–8 sheets of old newspaper
- Glue stick and white glue
- 2 cardboard circles, about 12 cm across (from a carton)
- Poster paint (optional)
Tools
- A pencil or thin stick for rolling
- Child-safe scissors
- An adult to cut the cardboard
Steps
- Tear or cut newspaper into strips about 10 cm wide.
- Lay a pencil across one corner of a strip and roll the paper tightly around it at a slant. Glue the end and slide the pencil out. Make about 25 tubes.
- Ask an adult to cut two cardboard circles about 12 cm across.
- Glue 11 tubes around one circle like the rays of a sun (an odd number makes the weaving work). Glue the second circle on top.
- Bend all the rays up. These are the uprights.
- Glue a new tube to one upright and weave it in front of one upright and behind the next, round and round.
- When a tube ends, push a new tube into its end with a dot of glue and keep weaving.
- Stop when the basket is about 8 cm tall. Fold each upright over and tuck it inside the top row with glue.
- Let it dry overnight, then paint it if you like.
⚠️ Safety noteAn adult cuts the cardboard. Newspaper ink can rub off — cover the table and wash hands after.
