Strong and weak passwords — Cyber safety for kids

A weak password can be guessed by a friend or cracked by a computer in seconds. In this course we use one simple rule. A password is strong when it has at least 12 characters, uses at least 3 of the 4 kinds of characters (small letters, capital letters, digits, symbols) and has no name, no year (like a birth year) and no common password word (like password, qwerty or welcome). Compare “Rohan2012” (short, a name and a year — weak) with “Kite-River-Lamp47” (17 characters, 4 kinds, nothing guessable — strong).

Long, mixed, not guessable — “length, a mix of kinds and nothing a friend could guess”

  1. Length: at least 12 characters (letters, digits and symbols all count).
  2. Mix: at least 3 kinds — small letters, capital letters, digits, symbols.
  3. Not guessable: no name, no year or birthday, no common word like password, qwerty or welcome. Break any one rule and the password is weak.

Use it for: Every new account — games, school portals, email and video sites — and whenever a password is leaked.

Worked example: 🔐 “Chai_Bell_2010” is weak. Which rule does it break? → has a name or year

  1. 14 characters — long enough ✓. Small letters, capitals, digits and symbols — 4 kinds ✓.
  2. 2010 is a year, so it breaks the rule: has a name or year.

Check: Try it: with a parent, test one of your passwords against the three rules (without saying it aloud) and fix it if it fails ✓
