What is an entrepreneur? — Entrepreneurship for kids

An entrepreneur is a person who starts a business: they spot a problem or a need, turn an idea into something people will buy, and take the risk that it may or may not make money. An employee works for an employer and gets a salary; the entrepreneur owns the business and keeps its profit — or bears its loss. Good entrepreneurs start small, ask customers, keep promises and learn from mistakes. For a child, every business starts with a parent’s permission.

Business tip

Spot, start small, learn — “see a problem, test a small idea, learn from every result”

  1. An entrepreneur starts and owns a business, takes the business risk and keeps the profit or loss. An employee works for an employer for a fixed salary.
  2. Helpful habits: spotting problems, trying small first, asking customers, learning from mistakes, keeping promises, being honest, working with a team.
  3. Unhelpful habits: giving up after one try, never asking anyone, copying a rival exactly, spending all the profit, blaming others, ignoring complaints.

Use it for: Thinking about any idea — a stall, a craft, a service — and how people who start businesses think.

Worked example: 🚀 Helpful or unhelpful for an entrepreneur: trying small first? → a helpful habit

  1. Ask: does this habit help a small business learn, grow and keep customers’ trust?
  2. Trying small first means less money at risk while you learn, so it is a helpful habit.

Check: Try it: write down three small problems you noticed this week at home, in school or in your colony ✓
