Living things — plants, animals, birds, insects and people — grow, breathe and need food, water and air. Non-living things such as a stone, a chair, a ball or a pencil do none of these. Animals live all around us — at home, on farms, in trees and under the ground. Many have special homes (a dog in a kennel, a bee in a hive, a rabbit in a burrow) and special names for their young ones (a cat has a kitten, a cow has a calf, a frog has a tadpole).
