Water can be a solid (ice, snow), a liquid (rain, sea water) or a gas (water vapour, steam). The sun heats water so it rises as vapour (evaporation); high up it cools into tiny drops that form clouds (condensation); the drops fall as rain, hail or snow (precipitation) and flow back to the sea. This endless journey is the water cycle.
