Active recall vs re-reading — Exam preparation tips

Re-reading and highlighting feel easy, but feeling familiar with a page is not the same as being able to recall it in the exam. Active recall means closing the book and testing yourself: answer questions, write everything you know on a blank page, explain it aloud or quiz a friend. It feels harder — and that effort is exactly what makes it stick. Getting something wrong in practice is useful: it shows what to fix.

Study tip

Test, don’t re-read — “pulling an answer out of memory builds it; looking at the page again does not”

  1. More effective: testing yourself, recalling from memory, explaining it aloud, practice questions, quizzing a friend, self-made flashcards.
  2. Less effective: re-reading the chapter, highlighting lines, copying notes neatly, glancing at notes.
  3. After reading a page: close it, recall it, check, and fix what you missed.

Use it for: Every study session — after reading a chapter, after class, and in revision.

Worked example: 🧠 Which usually helps you learn more for an exam: re-reading the chapter or testing yourself? → testing yourself

  1. Testing yourself makes you pull the answer out of memory (active recall); re-reading only shows you the page again.
  2. So testing yourself usually helps you learn more.

Check: Try it: after your next chapter, close the book and write everything you remember on a blank page, then check ✓
