Breaking a goal into steps — Exam preparation tips

A big goal can feel too heavy to start. Split it: 60 new words in 4 weeks is 15 words a week, about 2 a day. Write the big goal, split it into small clear steps, give each step a date, do the first step today and check every week. A good step is small and clear — “read pages 1 to 10 today”, not “do the whole syllabus”.

Study tip

Divide and date — “split the goal equally, give each step a date and start with the first”

  1. Order: write the big goal → split it into steps → give each step a date → do the first step → check and adjust weekly.
  2. Share it equally: amount each week = total ÷ number of weeks (e.g. 64 pages in 8 weeks → 64 ÷ 8 = 8 pages a week).
  3. A good step is small and clear (“make 10 flashcards”); a poor one is too big or vague (“master all maths”).

Use it for: Reading targets, syllabus revision, projects, sports practice and saving money.

Worked example: 🪜 Rohan’s goal is to read 64 pages in 8 weeks, the same number each week. How many pages is that each week? → 8

  1. Share 64 equally over 8 weeks: 64 ÷ 8.
  2. 64 ÷ 8 = 8 pages each week.

Check: Try it: split one goal into weekly steps with a date for each, and do the first step today ✓
