SMART goals — Exam preparation tips

A SMART goal is Specific (says exactly what), Measurable (has a number you can check), Achievable (realistic for you), Relevant (linked to your bigger aim) and Time-bound (has a deadline). Most weak goals miss just one letter — “Read 4 English novels” is clear and countable, but by when? Spot the missing letter and the goal becomes much stronger.

Study tip

Check all five letters — “a goal is SMART only when no letter is missing”

  1. S — Specific: names exactly what. M — Measurable: has a number to check. A — Achievable: realistic for you. R — Relevant: linked to your aim. T — Time-bound: has a deadline.
  2. Check a goal letter by letter; the one that fails is what to fix.
  3. Examples: “Practise fractions more before Friday” misses M; “Learn 20 guitar chords by 30 June” for better maths marks misses R; “Revise all 14 chapters tomorrow evening” misses A.

Use it for: Every time you set a target — for a term, a test, a habit or a hobby.

Worked example: 🎯 Which SMART letter is this goal missing? Aim: better maths marks. Goal: “Learn 20 guitar chords by 30 June.” → Relevant

  1. It is specific, measurable, realistic and has a date.
  2. But guitar chords do not help maths marks — it is not linked to the aim. So it is missing R: Relevant.

Check: Try it: write one goal for this month and check it letter by letter — S, M, A, R, T ✓
