Abacus flash — add the numbers as they flash

Numbers flash one after another on an abacus (or as digits). Picture the beads, add them in your head and type the total. Choose 1, 2 or 3 digits and slow, medium or fast.

How to play Abacus Flash

  1. Choose 1, 2 or 3 digits, a speed, and abacus beads or digits.
  2. Watch: the numbers flash one by one. Add them in your head as they come.
  3. When the flashing stops, type the total and press ✓.
  4. 8 sums a round — get all 8 right for the Flash Master badge.

What is abacus flash (flash anzan)?

A way abacus students practise mental maths: numbers are shown one at a time, very quickly, and the student adds them by picturing the abacus beads in their mind.

My child is new to the abacus. Can they play?

Yes. Start with 1 digit, slow, and the abacus view. Children who do not read the beads yet can choose digits.

Which speed should we start with?

Slow (1.5 seconds per number) until all 8 are right, then medium (1 second), then fast (0.65 seconds).
