Festivals of India — GK worksheet

India is home to many faiths, and we celebrate one another’s festivals with joy. On Diwali people light rows of diyas, on Holi they play with colours, on Raksha Bandhan sisters tie a rakhi, on Eid ul-Fitr Muslims end the Ramzan fasts and at Christmas people sing carols.

Festival and custom — “remember what people do on each festival and who mainly celebrates it”

  1. Hindus: Holi, Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan, Navratri, Ganesh Chaturthi. Muslims: Eid ul-Fitr, Eid ul-Adha. Christians: Christmas, Easter. Sikhs: Guru Nanak Jayanti. Buddhists: Buddha Purnima. Jains: Mahavir Jayanti.
  2. Diwali – festival of lights, Holi – festival of colours, Raksha Bandhan – tie a rakhi, Christmas – sing carols.
  3. National days: Republic Day 26 January, Independence Day 15 August, Gandhi Jayanti 2 October, Children’s Day 14 November.

Use it for: Class 2 GK lessons on festivals, school celebrations and making greeting cards.

Worked example: 🎉 On which festival do people tie a rakhi? → Raksha Bandhan

  1. A rakhi is a thread a sister ties on her brother’s wrist.
  2. This is done on Raksha Bandhan.

Check: “Raksha” means protection and “bandhan” means bond ✓
