Dress, punctuality and online interviews — Interview skills for students

First impressions start before you speak. Wear clean, ironed, simple clothes (a plain shirt or kurta, polished shoes) and reach 10–15 minutes early: count back the journey time and the early minutes from the start time. Online, put the camera at eye level, the light in front of you, a plain background behind, sit in a quiet room, test the mic and camera beforehand and join a few minutes early.

Tip

Neat, early, ready — “clean simple clothes, reach early, test your setup online”

  1. Dress: clean and ironed, simple, neat hair and nails; avoid torn jeans, slogan T-shirts, flip-flops and heavy perfume. Not sure? Dress a little more formal.
  2. Punctuality: leaving time = start time − journey − early minutes. Interview at 10:30 AM, a 40-minute journey, 15 minutes early → leave by 9:35 AM. Running late? Call and inform them at once.
  3. Online: camera at eye level, light in front, plain background, quiet room, mute when others speak, test mic and camera first, join 5 minutes early, look at the camera.

Use it for: The day of any interview — in person or online — and every exam, appointment or first day at work.

Worked example: ⏰ How early should you reach an in-person interview? → 10–15 minutes early

  1. Reaching early gives time to find the room, settle and breathe — but hours early is too much.
  2. So reach 10–15 minutes early.

Check: Try it: for your next appointment, write the start time, journey time and leaving time; then set up a test video call and check your camera, light and background ✓
